Spinal Tap has triumphantly returned to cinema screens, bringing the essential satire the world so desperately needs. Critics say it doesn’t quite live up to the original — but really, what could? The answer is simple: the new original. That’s right — the sequel is more original than the original because it is both new and original at the same time. This was the original working title for the new movie. The band even lobbied to change the name of the original film This is Spinal Tap to Spinal Tap: The Prequel, fearing fans might boo the new movie and leave negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, hoping to muddy the waters with the old reviews.
We are proud to say we are fans — not necessarily of Spinal Tap itself, but of the entire, highly specific, mostly nonexistent genre they represent. We can confirm with absolute confidence that this new film is a masterpiece. Or at least we think it is. We haven’t actually seen it, nor do we precisely mean what we just said. But the message remains resoundingly clear: it is, without question, a great movie.
